Litost - Pathos (2023) (English review)

 Litost is a Valencian band that practices black metal that is as extreme as it is emotional, and that comes to us as a recommendation from our always accurate friends at Blood Fire Death. From the moment we press play until the end of the almost 34 minutes of "Pathos", we enter a world of uncontained rage, united with the greatest introspection and human misery so present in the literature of the author Milan Kundera, everything a reference in the lyrics and general inspiration of this project.

 

 

There are several influences that help shape this quartet. To tell the truth, it becomes difficult and at the same time fun to be able to compare styles and bands given the fresh and entertaining themes that the album offers us. To begin with, the initial "Tromba" throws us a shower of stars in the form of riffs that can remind us of names from the most "post-" new wave of black, such as Der Weg einer Freiheit or Harakiri For The Sky. At the same time, the marked speed of all its cuts, as well as the few melodic pauses, give the general rhythm a freneticism that is very reminiscent of Scandinavian black classics. We have this example in cuts like "Espectro" or "Ambush".

 

 

As we were explaining previously, the great point in favor of these lovers of vital desperation is that they manage to embrace new ways of making black without losing the essence of older styles. Great proof of this is "Simún", another of the key moments of the album, and which also serves as an adequate presentation of the style they practice.


To finish this analysis in style, and taking advantage of the time that has passed since its launch, we can add that Litost have been winners of the Band Contest held by the Resurrection Fest for 2023, so those attending the Galician festival will have the opportunity to share human futility through riffs with them.

Litost es una banda valenciana practicante de un black metal tan extremo como emocional, y que nos llega como recomendación de nuestros siempre certeros amigos de Blood Fire Death. Desde que pulsamos el play hasta el fin de los casi 34 minutos de "Pathos", nos adentramos en un mundo de rabia nada contenida, unida a la mayor de las instrospecciones y la miseria humana tan presentes en la literatura del autor Milan Kundera, todo un referente en las letras e inspiración general de este proyecto.

 

 

Varias son las inluencias que ayudan a dar forma a este cuarteto. A decir verdad, se torna difícil y a la vez divertido poder comparar estilos y bandas ante los temas tan frescos y entretenidos que nos ofrece el álbum. Ya para empezar, la inicial "Tromba" nos lanza una lluvia de estrellas en forma de riffs que tanto puede recordarnos a nombres de la nueva ola del black más "post-", como Der Weg einer Freiheit o Harakiri For The Sky. Al mismo tiempo, la velocidad tan marcada de todos sus cortes, así como las contadas pausas melódicas, dotan al ritmo general con un frenetismo que recuerda mucho a los clásicos del black escandinavo. Este ejemplo lo tenemos en cortes como "Espectro" o "Emboscada".

 

Tal como íbamos desgranando anteriormente, el gran punto a favor de estos amantes de la desesperación vital es que consiguen abrazar los nuevos modos de hacer black sin perder la esencia de estilos más añejos. Gran prueba de ello es "Simún", otro de los momentos clave del disco, y que también sirve como adecuada presentación del estilo que practican. 

Para acabar este análisis por todo lo alto, y aprovechando el margen de tiempo que ha pasado desde su lanzamiento, podemos añadir que Litost han resultado ganadores del Band Contest que realiza el Resurrection Fest para este 2023, por lo que los asistentes al festi gallego tendrán la oportunidad de compartir la futilidad humana a base de riffs junto a ellos.
